Project Harar Surgical Mission · 10 May 2014

Project Harar provides access to treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration services in Ethiopia for children and young people with clefts and more complex facial disfigurements. We do this because these children and young people are at risk of stunting, malnutrition, and social exclusion.

Story

Thanks for supporting us nurses to join the Project Harar surgical mission to Ethiopia starting on 10 May 2014, led by Professor Mark McGurk, Maxillofacial Surgeon at Guy's Hospital.

We work at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and are volunteering two weeks of our annual leave to be part of a medical team which will treat and care for some of the poorest children, men and women in Ethiopia with severe facial disfigurements.

Life for these people can be unbearable - it's difficult to eat, breathe or smile and they are teased and ostracised in their villages.  Most of the children do not attend school and women and men often do not marry and are unable to earn a living.

We will work side by side with Ethiopian nursing staff at the Yekatit-12 Hospital and the Cheshire Home in Addis Ababa to help restore their faces and give them the opportunity to become engaged and accepted members of their communities.

Your support will enable us to travel to Addis Ababa and help change the lives of desperate people forever.
