Surfers Not Street Children needs your help!
Many of you follow the work of Surfers Not Street Children through its website, social media and monthly newsletter. The focus is on its day to day activities and the beautiful and often breathtaking stories of transformation in the lives of former street children.
But in order to do this vital work, Surfers Not Street Children has to fundraise. Right now we need to ensure that we can compete our 2017 plans and go forward confidently into 2018. We need your help to do this.
So as much as we love sharing the nitty gritty of the successes and day to day challenges on the ground with you, we have to focus for a short while on getting the project funded.
To here's the plan:
We need to raise $15 000 to add to what giving is already committed over the next few months. This is super important to us in order to continue our work and also develop it. This money will go towards our two projects:
1. The Surfhouse: this is the hub of our work and the live-in mentorship program for ex street children in Durban who are nearing or entering adulthood. The goal, through an array of programs is to ensure that they are employed and independent with a sustainable future when the move on. The Surfhouse looks for niche job opportunities for the youngsters and those who have come through this program have become lifeguards, surf coaches, surf retail workers, coffee baristas, restaurant workers, and even one pro free-surfer! Our team at the Surfhouse ensure that the youngsters are able to work through the challenges and complexities of the transformation from street life to a life of hope.
2. The Surf Club: this is a daytime surf and mentorship program for street children and children at risk in Durban. over 100 children access this program in a month and it provides a healthy alternative to street life for these youngsters. This program is run by award winning South African surf development coach, Sandile "Cyril" Mqadi and his staff.
Both projects have immediate and long-term funding needs and we need your support to boost them. For a more in-depth look at what we have launched a brand new 10 minute edit by film maker Simon Cotter. See our Social media pages.
Thanks so much for your support and encouragement and for rallying round when we have a need. We remain committed to ensuring that street children in Durban and beyond are empowered and given hope for a sustainable future. We also look forward to continuing to share this journey with you.
