Story
Thank you for supporting my fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support.
On 4th September (that is 7 days time!!!!!!!) I will be doing the South Coast Ultra Challenge, this is a 100km (62 miles) walk from Eastbourne to Arundel.
This is a continuous walk, no stopping overnight, just one foot in front of the other until I get to Arundel, approximately 30 hours later. This is an enormous challenge. There are over 2000 people completing this event all raising money for charities close to their heart.
EARLIER THIS SUMMER.
I took part in the Lake District Mighty Hike, a 26 mile walk around the beautiful Lake Ullswater on 19th June. A fantastic day! I finished the hike in 9hrs 5mins which gave me a ranking of 176th out of 1489 finishers!!
I am dedicating these walks to two very special people Maureen Newsham, and to Phoebe Rowlings.
Maureen was a dear friend who had a wonderful smile, a twinkle in her eye, and a gift of enriching the lives of all who knew her. She loved our kids as her own grandchildren. Maureen raised many thousands
of pounds for Cancer Research before her own diagnosis. We miss you. Rest in peace.
Phoebe Rowlings is 13. I have known Phoebe since she was at kindergarten with our eldest, if not before. She and her family are at Church with us every week. Phoebe has the biggest heart, the most beautiful smile, and will do anything to help someone else. A few weeks ago, quite out of the blue she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (a form of bone cancer) in her leg. Phoebe now faces chemotherapy, surgery and then more chemotherapy. She is an inspiration. I am honoured and proud to say that Phoebe’s name will be alongside Maureen’s on my green Macmillan T-shirt as I step out on both my “little walks”. When the 62 miles starts to hurt, to feel like it was a mad idea, I will picture Phoebe’s smile, and keep walking that bit faster. Phoebe, you keep fighting this horrible disease and I will keep walking (and making you biscuits!)…. deal?
Macmillan do an amazing job at supporting patients and their families after a diagnosis of cancer. The pain and aches I will no doubt get on the Ultra Challenge is nothing in comparison to the pain, heartache and distress caused by cancer.
