Story
Following our successful trip in 2019, a group of law, criminology and human rights students, graduates and staff from The Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice based at Sheffield Hallam University are going to Lesotho in June 2020 on a humanitarian two week project with Africa’s Gift charity.
We will be taking Wonderbags into to rural communities. In Lesotho women’s life expectancy is 54 years. According to the World Health Organisation more than 4 million people die prematurely due to smoke inhalation by cooking on open fires. Smoke damage is also the main cause of blindness in the developing world. The Wonderbags act like slow cookers, so that women can use the bags to cook food for up to 7 hours after initial preparation, meaning that they no longer have to cook for lengthy periods of time, also reducing time gathering and cutting wood and fetching water. This enables them instead to spend time with their children, or engage in work or education.
We are also collecting school shoes for children in local villages, as they are unable to attend local schools if they do not have shoes.
We will be engaging in both South Africa and Lesotho in community
project work including support for domestic violence projects.
We are very grateful for all contributions towards the project, which will be spent on enabling the students to go on the trip and to buy as many Wonderbags as possible. If anyone has any black school shoes, or any type of adult shoes, to donate please get in touch and we will arrange collection.
We will keep you posted and informed of the vital fundraising and the work we will carry out whilst in Lesotho and afterwards on our return.
Thank You So Much
