Fundraising for Mission Direct

Why are we going to Cambodia? We took a holiday to in spring 2009 and we were deeply challenged by the plight of this nation and its people. The scars of the Pol Pot years are still very much in evidence. As a result we are going back in March 2010 with the charity Mission Direct to work on The New Happy Village project. The New Happy VillageThis project based in Phnom Penn re-houses poor families from shacks on the polluted Mekong Delta, lifting hundreds of families from a hopeless, violent and disease ridden existence. Families also receive health education and training in life skills as well as schooling and work opportunities.
What will we do?
We will be helping to build the village by painting and brick laying. Brick laying!! We will also participate in various community projects, help children with their English speaking, meet local people and encourage the local church.
We are funding the trip as part of our contribution and anything we take over and above this will go directly to the project.
We plan to use part of the extra funds we take to purchase pens and work books to distribute to the children. These are luxury items for parents struggling to feed their families. Schooling is free in but without pens and work books the children cannot go. The alternative is working on the streets.
