Story
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2019, but due to a tumour on my bladder, a cardiac problem and the pandemic, it was October 2020 before it was successfully treated.
Following the surgery, I was getting regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests for around 12 months, which unfortunately started to show a gradual increase in PSA levels. This resulted in further scans and in September 2022 I started the first of 33 radiotherapy sessions over a six-and-a-half week period.
Throughout my treatment I have nothing but praise for the excellent care and attention from all NHS staff in urology, the UCAN Centre, cardiology and radiotherapy.
The Friends of ANCHOR team were also incredibly caring during my radiotherapy, which is unfortunately something we had first-hand experience of after my wife Margaret's successful breast cancer treatment in 2013.
So when the Friends of ANCHOR patient transport was set up in 2019, being retired, we both volunteered – and learned so much more about how much the charity does for patients and their families, and the lifeline it offers.
So here I am. Ready to put on a Brave face to hopefully give back to the charity that help us so much.
I would like to thank Paula and Vicki at the charity for their gentle persuasion to take part, as well as Margaret and the rest of my family for their encouragement and support.
