Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Some of you may know I'm training for a half marathon, but you probably don’t know the reasons why.
I work as a family law barrister. I see on a regular basis individuals who, without access to early specialist legal advice, too often have to reach crisis point before they can access the help they need. Rights mean nothing without the knowledge and means to enforce them.
Family Rights Group works with families whose children are in need, are at risk, or are in the care system. Every £50 raised enables Family Rights Group to provide specialist, legal advice to desperate callers contacting the advice service. It might be a young care leaver who is a victim of domestic abuse and is worried her baby will be removed and adopted. It might be a young man who wants his little brother to live with him, instead of being taken into care following the deterioration of their mother's mental health. It might be a grandmother, who is in severe poverty and is getting no help to singlehandedly raise her grandchildren, one of whom has special needs. Currently Family Rights Group only has funding to help three in ten callers contacting their advice service. Yet, evaluations of the service demonstrate that Family Rights Group's advice can be transformational, helping families to understand their rights and options, cope better, and it increases the likelihood of children living safely within their family network.
As someone who hates running, training has been hard and, at times, a lonely experience. But it is worth it, because I know the good work this charity will do.
