New writing is the life-blood of theatre. The diversity and strength of the writing featured in BEAM 2016 bore testament to a very exciting future for British musical theatre. There is no question that there is a wonderful new wave of writing talent starting to crest in the UK. BEAM is an essential part of the infrastructure propelling the craft forwards and bringing new musicals to the audiences they deserve.
During the early years of our careers, we were lucky enough to showcase our work in front of the best in the industry, including Cameron Mackintosh. Opportunities like BEAM can change everything.
If you love musicals as much as we do, if being in the audience brings you joy, makes you feel more alive and in-tune with the world around you, please donate what you can. Every single pound donated to BEAM 2018 makes a difference. Writers need your support more than ever!
Thank you so much,
George and Ants x

ABOUT BEAM
BEAM is a key part of charities Mercury Musical Developments & Music Theatre Network’s mission to support the development of new musical theatre. It consists of a two-day showcase event, preceded by a series of pitching days through which new work and artists are identified. BEAM is designed to encourage and develop musical theatre across the UK, identifying and supporting diverse art form development, connecting practitioners and finding champions for original work.
BEAM is:
• A biennial industry showcase of new British musical theatre.
• The most extensive overview of the new writing landscape of British musicals, with presentations of/excerpts from over 40 new works, by their writers or producers, selected from pitching days held around the UK.
• Intended to efficiently give access to the most exciting writers of, and ideas for, new British musicals – particularly for those venues and producers with resources to develop new musicals.
• A marketplace and networking opportunity for those wanting to develop, produce, or support brilliant new British musicals.
Those who attended BEAM 2016 likened it to a “Woodstock moment” for new British musicals, as there was such a buzz generated around the quality and diversity of talent showcased. Those presenting work praised the non-competitive, supportive environment where they could present alongside peers, and move forward with a renewed sense of community and pride in the new writing sector of British musicals.
The event trended on Twitter for three days, and over 60% of the new musicals showcased went on to be produced or further developed, mostly with support found at BEAM. 58 writing teams are showcasing their work at BEAM 2018 so whether you’re a fellow writer, a producer, work at a venue or a supporter of new British musical theatre, you will want to be there. It’s at Theatre Royal Stratford East on 1st – 2nd March 2018. We can’t wait!
