Bowel Cancer Facts and Statistics
Nearly all bowel cancers develop in the large bowel – two-thirds of these are in the colon and one-third in the rectum. Bowel cancer is also referred to as colorectal or colon cancer.
On the Bowel Cancer UK website, ‘bowel cancer’ refers to cancer of the large bowel and not small bowel cancer.
• More than 37,500 men and women are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK every year, making it the third most common cancer; that's someone every 15 minutes
• Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK and more than 16,000 people
die each year; that's someone every 30 minutes
• 97% of all diagnoses are in people over the age of 50
• If diagnosed at the earliest stage, bowel cancer is highly treatable, with a survival rate of more than 90% over five years
My Dad is all clear now from colon cancer and I want to give other people to be in the survival rate of 90%
