Story
The 80th Anniversary Walk is now completed.
This time last week Neil and myself had just started the walk to mark the 80th Anniversary of the final flight of Lancaster ED549. Six members of it's crew were kilted in the crash. To mark this event we walked from Grantham to Nottingham (33 Miles) along the Grantham canal towpath. We laid a wreath at the memorial close to Plungar, along the towpath, on the actual date of the anniversary. As well as honouring the memory of the crew in this way, the money raised is being directed to the Bomber County Gateway Trust to help in the raising of funds to enable the completion of the "On Freedom's Wings" sculpture. During the walk, which was spread over three mornings, we were very lucky with the weather. We had chilly starts each morning at around 7:30-8:00 am. and finished in the early afternoon on Saturday and Sunday, completing the whole thing by 10:30 am. on Monday, where the canal meets the river Trent about 100 yard from Lady Bay Bridge. Along the way we passed two airfields which are still active today , which were in use as RAF Langar and RAF Tollerton.
On behalf of the Bomber County Gateway Trust, we would like to thank everyone who sponsored us and look forward to the day when "On Freedom's Wings" can be seen beside the A46 between Lincoln and Newark. During this appeal, I have been pleased to increase our target value as the donations came in. Thank you all for your help.
