Story

Well I did it and without stopping!!

I would just like to say a very big thank you to everyone who kindly sponsored me. I even managed to break the total I had set. All your names are listed below. Once again thankyou so much.

Lets hope the money can be used to cure this disease.

Get well soon John, did it for you.

My wife could not stop laughing after I had told her of my plans to run in the BUPA Great Yorkshire Run. She thought I had lost my mind. She said I’d never last 1K never mind 10K!

So what are my reasons for doing this 10k run or have I really lost it?

Two reasons really: ~

One - To get myself fit and to try and lose the ‘spare tyre’ that is developing as I get older. Also to prove to myself that I can still be dedicated enough to train for an event, even with dodgy knees after quite a few years playing football, squash, & badminton in my youth.

Two - This is the real reason. A few months ago my Head of Department in Engineering at Sheffield City College was diagnosed with Cancer. This came as quite a shock to our department. He was always full of life, how could this be happening to him? It really brought it home to me that life is so precious and you must live each day as it comes. He was the one who took me under his wing when I first started at the college, becoming my un-official mentor. In fact if it was not for him I probably would not be here now. I remember my first few weeks in teaching at the college being a bit ‘rough’; he really helped me through my initial settling in period. I have chosen to run for Cancer Research in honour of him

Cancer Research UK is one of the few independent organisations in the world with the ability to transform pioneering research into treatments for cancer patients. Regrettably, there is still no total and complete cure for cancer although in some cases the cancer will go into a partial or complete remission. The good news is that the earlier the cancer is discovered, the greater the chances of treating it successfully and early detection most often means that less extensive treatment will be required.

Please help me towards my target (and beyond) if at all possible by donating whatever you can afford.

Oh, there is a third reason, to prove my wife wrong!!
