Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I was always one of those people that used to see the adverts about cancer affecting every 1 in 2 of us and think to myself...... “nah not me!” Then one day, 18 months ago, it was indeed me! Bowel cancer, two months after the old big 50 birthday. Bit of a blow, but after undergoing surgery and then six gruelling months of chemotherapy I was one of the lucky ones who got to ring the bell, it wasn’t like the advert at all, just me and a cleaner ha! Anyway, thankfully, I received an all clear for now!
The Christie Hospital is such a humbling place to have to attend, its here that you realise how widespread and unforgiving cancer really is. I can tell you now, it’s a daunting prospect (particularly to a wimp like me) to have to undertake chemotherapy. However the staff at The Christie are simply marvellous with each and every one of them taking time to sooth nerves, allay fears and attend to every problem that you may have.
I can’t thank them enough, from my Oncologist Dr Hassan and all his staff, Lilly my clinical trials Nurse, through to the lovely lady that checks you in to Dr H’s clinic (big shout out for Bev). I also want to thank my surgeon Mr Mo Saeed, of Alexandra Hospital, such a gentleman! These people do such miraculous things all year round, not just in times of crisis such as we’ve faced they should never be forgotten.
So here I am, 18 months later, having taken up cycling again during lockdown and aiming to complete Manchester to Blackpool bike ride on 13th September 2020. A 98km ride! (I will be staying on till Fleetwood for some chips just to make it 100km) What have I done??
Anyway, I’m wanting to raise a few quid to just say thanks and maybe contribute to the spectacular research programme that will save many other people like myself. The Christie Hospital is not just a local Manchester hospital, they are at the forefront of national and international cancer research, pioneering new treatments such as Proton Beam therapy, T-Cell therapy and just generally improving the affects of chemotherapy (I’m sure there is so much more).
