Story
Half a million children suffer abuse in the UK every year
Last year the NSPCC Helpline contacted agencies about 22,505 children to investigate abuse and neglect concerns – that’s an average of 62 children a day
Having been an abused child at home, and placed in the care system myself since the age of 6, I know very well through first hand experience some of the traumatic experiences children can face and the impact that the NSPCC can have in improving life chances for every child. I was removed from my biological family by social services for my own safety and placed in the care system moving around many children’s homes and foster homes through my
life until the age of 18. The average person moves house around 7 or 8 times in their life, I had already greatly surpassed this before leaving care.
I have been able to overcome the stigma associated with being in care, and am now a successful Executive Principal working for Haberdashers Trust. I hope to inspire other children in care to follow in my footsteps and achieve their goals. I would love my former social workers to see what they helped me achieve and to thank them for their support. I am determined to make a difference in the lives of other children, and hope that my story will inspire others to do the same.
I have fond memories of Maureen and Paul (2 NSPCC social workers who looked after me), who went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and cared for. They provided me with some stability and
were always available to listen to me. Their kindness and compassion helped me to overcome my difficult childhood and achieve my goals. I want to run the London Marathon to raise funds for the NSPCC, this will help other children in need receive the same kind of support I received.
