Story
In 1988, I helped set up Imran with the third goal in the 3-1 win over West Germany that led to the iconic ‘Where were the Germans but frankly who cares ?’ commentary from Barry Davies. To support Imran with his diagnosis, I will be leading our team of runners at the London marathon on Sunday the 3rd of October.
I decided I wanted to help Imran and others living with Dementia and knew that supporting Alzheimer’s research UK (ARUK) and by running in the iconic London marathon at the age of 60 (my first ever marathon!!), might help towards my goal. My Team, “Running for Gold” has now grown to eight of us raising money for ARUK, along with a huge groundswell of support from other hockey players, friends and media around the UK that remember Imran and the 88 team that I was so fortunate to be a part of.
I would like to say thank you all so much for your support however small. Every pound will add to our total to help ARUK with their research into find a cure for those now and in the future living with Dementia.
A final few words from us:
Imran “I have gone from fighting the disease to accepting it, and that has made every day easier to live through. Every day of my life, I am thankful for having wonderful people around me, especially my lovely wife and three great boys. I’m so thankful to Steve and the team for raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. I’m looking forward to hopefully cheering everyone on at the marathon.
Steve “Imran, along with many others, our living with dementia for the rest of their lives. For me, the challenge is simple “get to the start line of the London Marathon, cross the finish line with a bit of training thrown in beforehand”. The challenges I face during the marathon will be nothing compared to those living with dementia – These are my thoughts every day I go for a run and think about why am I taking this challenge on!! 😊
Thank you all so much for your support & for any awareness you can raise for ARUK.
