Story
Halow support young people, aged 16+, with a learning disability on their journey into and through adult life. This bike ride is one of their major fundraisers. 250 miles, 3 days , 2 boats and a lot of leg power.
I have been lucky enough to meet some of the young adults helped by halow , they are inspirational; as are the halow volunteer team - a wonderful group trying to make a difference to young peoples lives.
I will be undertaking a significant challenge myself by sitting on the back of a bike with no control of either direction or brakes! My ride partner steve roser has had a recent partial knee replacement and it seemed a reasonable way for me to ensure he could complete his 5th ride (3rd for me) whilst he is in rehab from the op.
Our trusty steed is a 1980s Dawes super galaxy- 20+kgs and not a whiff of carbon fibre , or Di2 in sight - we may get toe clips if we get confident in the handling. It will be long and arduous ordeal for me - and that will just be listening to steve rabbit on for 3 days ; but it will be fun and we will certainly learn a lot about teamwork and earn any sponsorship received .
Look out for updates and please help if you can
I’ve been asked a bit about the bike so here’s the full spec :
The Dawes Super Galaxy tandem is a superb example of the classic British touring tandem. Built in Reynolds 531 and finished in a deep blue paint it is a real classic. It has some very useful additions including a couple of Zefal bottle cages, a Dawes pump and an aluminium rear pannier rack. The rims are the proper sturdy Weinmann 'Concave' model laced to a gorgeous pair of Suzue hubs. There is a Aria drag brake at the rear which is operated from a SunTour stem mounted shifter and is great for scrubbing off speed on long descents. There are a couple of rust spots on the top tube and the splash tape might not be to everyones taste, but all parts are in great condition. With a good mix of Shimano and SunTour parts it rides fantastically well and although there are a few minor spots of rusts in places, it's generally in excellent shape and will do many more miles in style and comfort.
