I'm going to be taking on the world's most famous 26.2 miles on Sunday 23rd April for The Brain Tumour Charity.
My father received his brain tumour diagnosis in 1992 at 31 when I was one and my brother was three years old, after a flight to Cyprus caused him severe head pain due to the pressure. A scan revealed my father's brain tumour was in his pre-frontal cortex (right behind the eyes), making things tricky.
Two brain surgeries later, a chunk (but not all was gone). He was given a handful of years to live.
The 5-year brain tumour survival rate in the UK is c. 11%.
Fast forward six months later and my Mother was now a full-time stay-at-home carer to my father, their respective businesses dissolved, in order to help administer his new routine of 28 pills a day, and raise the family.
The tumour slowly degraded his functions as time went on… but at least the Doctor's were wrong with their timing estimates. Dad lived until 2015 and we had 23 years with him.
Having reached 31 years old myself - it’s an apt time to do the run in his memory.
It is due to the excellent work conducted by charities such as The Brain Tumour Charity that we are continuing to move forward, and that's why I'll be running!
All of your donations, large and small, really do make a difference. We hugely appreciate anything you're able to give.
