I am raising money for Breast Cancer UK in memory of my wife Yvonne Kirk, who sadly and tragically passed away after a 18 month battle against this horrible disease. Yvonne was 51 and a fit, slim, healthy-eating, none smoking and beautiful mother of two. Only two weeks before her initial diagnosis, in June 2012, she had completed a 10K to support the Nottingham Hospice. Yet in that two weeks her breathing collpased and she was rushed to hospital where her lungs were riddled with breast cancer and she was not expected to survive the weekend. She never had any lumps or signs of breast cancer despite teh fact she checked herself religiously. This happens in about 5% of breast cancer cases. Yvonne fought her condition so bravely and never once gave in to her condition. She was an inspiration to so many.
Yvonne had to contend with the cancer spreading to her spine and she had two painful, four hour operations to replace vertebrae in her neck and have stabilising bars screwed into her spine. She never fully recovered from that and despite battling the disease for a further year (where she managed to get onto two breaks in Liverpool and Eastbourne with her husband and little girl Maya, 7 that she enjoyed so much) she passed away from Sepsis, a systemic infection on 23 Dec 2013, just two days before Christmas, a time of year she loved so much to spend with her family. Such a tragedy she didn't make Christmas, a target she had set herself.
There are millions of women who contract breast cancer like Yvonne. Sadly, many also suffer Yvonne's fate. Please let's try to make that history, after all, what if it were your wife, daughter, sister or girlfriend? This happens to ordinary people just like us. We were a normal, hard working family, destroyed by this affliction.
Please donate generously to try and wipe out this scourge that kills so many women.
