British 10K London Run 2009 · 12 July 2009 ·
Picture this scene...Your young, healthy and in the middle of playing your favourite sport .
All of a sudden you get a squeezing, crushing pain in your chest. Your vision blurs and the memory you have upon waking up in ER is the sensation that you were falling towards the earth.
How could this have happened? You exercise regularly, dont smoke, your blood pressure and cholesterol are all perfect and there is no family of heart disease.
You are told you have HCM (Hyper Obstructive Cardiomyopathy) - a ‘chunky heart muscle heart disorder - the most common cause of sudden death in young people. Although a relatively uncommon heart disease, it is estimated that ten thousand people in the United Kingdom have the condition. It is also linked to Sudden Death Syndrome (unexpected and unexplained death occurring in apparently healthy young people)
The prognosis...No taking your heart rate over 60% of maximum, the insertion of a ICD unit (pace maker), life time of beta blockers and the risk of going into cardiac arrythmia.
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
I was diagnosed with HCM in 2001 and am completing the British 10K london run to give other HCM sufferers the belief that there is the ability live a normal life with this life threatening condition
