"I have 64p left in my purse to last for the next two weeks"
Imagine not having enough money to heat your house in winter, use electricity or even to travel to work. Imagine living in total isolation and in fear of answering the doorbell in case the bailiffs are there. Imagine not knowing if you'll be able to feed your children tomorrow.
This is a daily reality for many people living on the poverty line in the UK and just some of the devastating effects of debt, not to mention extreme psychological stress, anxiety, utter desperation and despair.
But there is hope. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is on a mission to release thousands of families from grinding poverty through award-winning debt counselling and community groups such as job clubs and life skills training. They equip and empower local churches to reach out on their doorsteps, which is how I came to be involved as a volunteer with my local Debt Help Centre. Hackney is the third poorest borough in London and all proceeds will go to helping this essential work to continue. At the moment we only have funding until August 2019. It costs £405 to help someone become debt free and the majority of people helped through CAP remain debt free and achieve long-lasting financial freedom.
Many well-known people have endorsed the professional, committed and life-changing services of CAP including Justin Welby (Archbishop of Canterbury) and Martin Lewis (Money Saving Expert and my personal hero), amongst others.
