Story
I started training for a Channel relay swim in October 2019. Alongside my 'Salty Selkies' team-mates I have swum in pools, lidos, lakes, rivers and the sea and did regular 'land training' during the lockdowns when we were unable to swim. I recently completed my qualifying swim so I am all set to tackle the Channel in July.
The National Literacy Trust give face to face programmes and vital literacy resources for disadvantaged children around the country.
Covid-19 is set to have a disastrous impact on the literacy of the 4.6 million children living in poverty in the UK, who already start school with vocabularies up to 19 months behind their peers. This holds them back at every stage of their lives, meaning that they are:
- five times more likely to fail to meet the expected standards in English at age 11
- four times more likely to struggle to read as adults
- twice as likely to be unemployed by age 34
- three times more likely to have mental health problems as adults
The impact of Covid-19 shouldn't last a lifetime.
I have always enjoyed losing myself in a book (as all my friends and family know) so I am keen that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to read and have access to plenty of books.
