Story
I decided to run this 10k on my lovely Mum's anniversary to raise funds for her grandson's charity 'The House that Zac Built' which he set up this year. Mum was so very proud of what Zac was doing and it feels exactly the right thing to be doing to celebrate her life.
I am running with my friends Emma, Rachel, Claire and Neil who are each raising funds for Zac's next project.
The story of the House that Zac built is detailed below but more information is available on the website: www.the housethatzacbuilt.org.uk
In 2011, my son Zac decided to volunteer in Tanzania with money that his grandparents had saved up for his 18th birthday. Whilst volunteering at a local orphanage Zac became very close to Mama Mary and her family, and would visit on most weekends to supply them with food and other necessities. Eventually, Mama Mary felt comortable enough around Zac to ask him if he could fix their roof. The roof was riddled with holes and would leak perfusely when it rained, leaving the family sleeping in damp conditions. Zac thought at that moment that getting on the roof would end up with the house collapsing, so he decided to build them a new house instead!
Zac returned home intending to raise the money and return the following year. After struggling to raise and save funds in the UK, Zac travelled to Australia where he worked three different jobs and saved enough money for the project and headed back to Africa in September 2012.
After nearly two years of hard work, persistence, and commitment to the cause, Zac finally completed the house. Mama Mary and her family now enjoy a spacious three roomed house, with an outdoor toilet and vegetable garden.
Mum was so very proud of what Zac had acheived and when she passed away last year we asked for donations for The House that Zac built instead instead of flowers. With these funds and other money generously donated, Zac has completed the second 'House that Zac Built' and two toilets.
We are currently working towards raising ta further £5,000 to start a new project.
