Story
St Cuthbert's Way is 62.5 miles long and the name of the charity I am raising sponsorship for is 500miles.
When I originally had the idea of walking St Cuthbert's Way to celebrate my 50th Birthday, I had hoped to walk it in four consecutive days. However, I have now revised my expectations and have split the 62.5 miles into 8 separate walks.
St Cuthbert's Way is a walk which stretches from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) in Northumberland and we will be walking through some beautiful Borders countryside which I will really enjoy, being a Borders girl myself. Check out www.stcuthbertsway.net for more details.
On Sunday 10th July 2011, Team Hogwarts (consisting of myself, Susan, Carolyn and Gerry) put our best feet forward and set off on the first leg of the Walk from Melrose to St Boswells. We managed to cover the 7.5 miles without mishap which has given me the confidence to schedule the remaining 7 walks over the next 4 weeks.
500miles is an Edinburgh based charity run by Olivia Giles OBE. Their aim is to support amputees and other disabled people in Malawi and Zambia in Africa, with particular focus in the delivery and development of prosthetic and orthotic services. These countries are amongst the poorest in the world and less than 5% of people would could use prostheses and orthoses actually get them. Follow the link www.500miles.co.uk and watch the 4 minute DVD on the home page and you will see exactly why I am supporting the work of this wonderful charity.
NB. This is a NO PRESENTS birthday! All I want for my birthday is sponsorship - friends and family if you could please take note - thank you.
This will be a challenge for me and there is a glimmer of hope that I may just
be able to complete the Walk by walking onto Holy Island on my actual birthday, which is 10th August 2011. However, it may take longer depending on how much progress we make in the coming weeks, so we'll just take it one week and one walk at a time.
Thanks
Jane
