Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Logan's JustGiving page.

Logan is my gorgeous little man who is 3 months old. He was born on the 9th of July 2011 at 37 weeks weighing 6lb 11oz.

Shortly after he was born I noticed he always seemed to face the same way, and hardly ever seemed to turn to look the other way. I mentioned it to various doctors, midwives and health visitors and I was told he probably just preferred that side and that it was nothing to worry about. As the weeks went by I started to notice his head going a little flat and mis-shapen. I mentioned this at Logan's 6 week postnatal check, and I was told many babies get flat spots and that it was nothing to worry about and would most likely right itself. I was advised to try repositioning, and keeping him off the flat side as much as possible.

I recently saw a doctor at the hospital regarding another problem Logan has (not related to his head or neck) and I decided to mention his head and neck. The doctor has diagnosed Tortocollis - this is where the neck muscles are tight or twisted which cause him to have his head  tilted to one side. It is also very difficult for him to turn his head the other  way - hence why he always seemed to favour one side. He has now been referred to the physio to help with this. The doctor did'nt really comment on his head shape - just said that it would most likely right itself as he got older.

I decided to get another opinion so made Logan an appointment at the Steeper Clinic in Leeds.

18th October 2011:

Today Logan has his first appointment at the Steeper Clinic. He had a scan and I was told that Logan has severe plagiocephaly, and mild brachycephaly.

The NHS do not fund treatment for these conditions as they are said to be just 'cosmetic'. This is not entirely true as plagiocephaly is also linked to developmental delays, facial assymetry and in bad cases can cause alignment problems with jaw and teeth. Logan's face is already out of alignment, one of his ears is further forward than the other.

Treatment would include wearing a STARband helmet for 23 hours a day for several months. It is recommended that this treatment begins at 4 months. Logan is only 3 months and too young, so we have to go back in a few weeks time for another scan. If there is no improvement we will be going ahead with helmet treatment. It is thought that his head will not get any better in this time due to him having Torticollis, apparently babies with Tortocollis can get worse. So I was advised by the lady at the Steeper Clinic to start fundraising now to raise the £2000 needed to get Logan a STARband (the helmet used to treat this conditions)

I aim to raise £2000 for Logan's treatment. I was told about a charity called Headstart4babies which are a small charity who give advice and support to families dealing with Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly. They have a small fund which can help some families on a low income to go ahead with the treatment. I have set up this justgiving page to raise some money for Logan's STARband treatment. Any donations go directly to Headstart4babies and they will then pay for Logan's treatment. Any remaining funds will go the Headstart4babies charity who will forward the money on to other families in need.

Thank you for taking the time to visit Logan's page. Any donations will be very much appreciated. Even the smallest donation will make a difference x

10th November 2011

Logan had another scan at the Steeper clinic today. He has had 1mm of improvement at the back of his head where the worst of the flattening is. But it has got very slightly worse on other areas of his head. We are to go back in 4 weeks for another scan and then a decsion will be made about getting him a helmet.

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated x

23rd December 2011

We had a re-scan at Steeper clinic today. We were meant to go a couple of weeks ago but had to rearrange the appointment as Logan was ill in hospital with Bronchiolitis.

There was'nt really any change in Logan's head, so we are going ahead with the STARband treatment. Logan's starband has been ordered, and we have an appointment for the helmet fitting on the 4th of January.

Thank you so much to those who have donated x
