Story
In May 2018, a few of us pushed ourselves to the limit and ran the Milton Keynes Marathon for Smiles for Stanley, raising over £7000 in the process (thanks again to Chris, Richie, Ryan and Simon). Well in 2019 we’re going a little further, and with more participants, some 113 miles further in fact.... but this time sitting down!
Between 10th May and 13th May 2019, 19 of us will be cycling the Coast to Coast route from Whitehaven in the west to Sunderland in the east. We will be honouring Stanley George Apple every pedal rotation of the way, and in particular as we reach the end of Day 2 when we’ll arrive in the town of Stanley in County Durham.
Why, you ask?
Firstly, the 139 miles C2C journey is representative of the number of days from Stanley’s diagnosis to his last day of (10 rounds of!) Chemotherapy.
And secondly, Sarah and I have witnessed first hand other families that have lost their precious children all too soon since our very own hero Stanley was so cruelly taken away from us, this cannot continue. Every penny we continue to raise will go to groundbreaking research to ultimately find a cure for Neuroblastoma, as well as making the treatment of this hideous disease kinder to those little ones who are forced to endure it.
As many of you will be aware, Stanley smiled and smiled and then smiled some more, he brought joy and laughter to our lives and in return we’ll again do our very best to do him proud. Please dig deep, give what you can and sponsor this motley crew of intrepid cyclists to pedal (S)Miles to Stanley!
As an aside we also plan on losing plenty of weight collectively to assist with the long up-hills en route, so again, feel free to sponsor not only the pedalling but the sacrifice of chocolate, cakes, crisps, biscuits and alcohol too.
Introducing; Anthony Moran, Brian Farrar, Chris Nicholson, Craig Wilson, Graham Sinclair, Ian Bond, Jim Wood, Kate Rivers, Lee Perkins, Luke Elam, Michael Appleton, Nick Gilmour, Neil Sullivan, Paul Bond, Paul Taylor, Phil Hunter, Rob Matthews & Simon Worfolk
You can donate in two ways; on this page or alternatively via the donate button on Stanley’s page on the Solving Kids' Cancer website.
You can follow The Smiles for Stanley Fund on Facebook @SmilesForStanley.
Photos of those taking part and updates on their training will be here, so check back in to see and hear how we’re all getting on over the next weeks and months.
With our most grateful thanks,
Paul, Sarah, Freddie and of course, Stanley George xx
