Story
For the thousands who walk or ride up Hills Rd each day on their way to the historic city centre of Cambridge, St Paul’s Church, a Grade two listed building with its prominent tower, is a striking landmark. The church garden beside the tower is a small oasis of green, offering many a place for resting, drinking coffee, or lunchtime refreshment.
Visitors who venture inside will find an extensive and beautiful space which provides a community space as well as a place of worship, where throughout the week, a variety of groups now pursue activities to promote health and well-being or share resources through the food bank and hospitality meals.
Within the building, over 1000 people each week attend a range of positive community events and the ethos of the church is to welcome all and support the community in which it is situated through all its facilities, which are shared with groups of all faiths or none.
But this beautiful interior can only be accessed safely if the exterior fabric is maintained in good order and the time now has come to carry out a major external restoration project to ensure this Currently, work is urgently needed to renovate the tower to prevent masonry falls and
preserve it in good condition for the next generation. The work requires:
- Erection of scaffolding around the outside of the building, including the tower;
- Stone, brickwork and roof repairs to the top of the tower and its four turrets, which are about 25 metres above ground level;
- Stone and brickwork repairs to the nave and aisle parapets –around 150 sq.m of repointing, including replacement of spalled bricks and stonework stabilisation;
- Repairs to rainwater gullies and downpipes.
