On Saturday April 4th, myself, my wife (Shayla), brother (Stephen) and close friends (Carrie and Claire) are doing a charity abseil down Portsmouth's Spinnaker tower in honour of our nephew Sam who sadly passed away after a short and painful battle with a rare form of cancer.
During his time in hospital, he went through a lot - vast amounts of medicines, their side effects and too much pain. Throughout this, he was more worried about those around him, a selfless and true fighter.
One of his wishes was to start a charity to help others, to help sick children and their families get through this tough period and improve their time in hospital, a time that is stressful, painful and sometimes scary.
Please help Samuel's memory and others like him - go to his Facebook Page www.facebook.com/samuelscharity and Like it and share this page with your family and friends, the money he raises will benefit very sick kids and their families through this dark and painful time, a time when they need help and support the most.
What we are doing with the money
We have started small at the very beginning of the charity by getting a toaster for the ward Samuel was on (Pinckney). Then it was mugs for the parents as there were so few. Next, christmas decorations to make the ward more cheerful over christmas.
Now we will be replacing all the old TVs in the rooms and small ward in Pinckney ward. TVs are the main way many kids pass the time as they are sometimes too sick to play games or get out of bed.
We are testing new sofa beds as this is a major factor in parents getting a good night's sleep. This is essential so they can take good care of their child and deal with the stress, worry and fear of the situation, especially when they stay for more than a few nights.
There will be games, DVD's, books, Netflix, DS and PSP games, Ipads and many other items that will help and we are discussing with parents, kids and the staff to see what is next. We planned only to get these items IF we could raise enough but now we have exceeded this. There are other childrens wards that need the same help and we will be helping them in just the same way.
I want you to know how much your donations help and change the lives of these kids and their families. From going through this as a parent I know what a difference a bit of fun or a good nights sleep is worth. It is priceless. To see your child in pain is heart breaking, especially every day, and a simple thing like a TV can relieve and distract them from the pain so well.
