West Midlands Police (Cov XV) 28-29 Warwickshire Police

At Broadstreet RFC on Tuesday 28th April 2009 West Midlands Police RFC (Coventry XV) hosted Warwickshire Police RFC in memory of Shaun 'Spiney'  Foster. The fixture is an annual charity match for the John Lobley Trophy and this year's charity is the Air Ambulance, nominated by Spiney's family.

Spiney was a Warwickshire Police Officer who died in June 2008, leaving behind a young family. On 5th September 2008, Warwickshire Police RFC (Veterans XV) played a charity match against Spiney's club, Nuneaton Old Edwardians, for whom he made 185 appearances at prop forward during nine seasons between 1994 and 2003. Old Ed's won 30-15 and an impressive £835 was donated to the air ambulance.

Warwickshire Police started well, capitalising on an early handling error by Coventry Police to score an unconverted try. Coventry put Warwickshire under pressure and ill-discipline gifted PC Karl Mackley two successive penalties to make the score 6-5. The lead changed hands many times throughout the game, notably with Detention Officer Jason Hester scoring his first try for Cov Police, only to be sent to the sin bin a minute later. With five minutes to go it was 23-22 to Coventry Police. A costly handling error in the Cov Police twenty-two gifted Warwickshire with a converted try to make the score 29-23 with one minute remaining. In the final phase of play, Sgt Adam Keen ran from the Cov Police half and released winger Det.Sgt Stu Grundy who scored in the corner to make it 29-28. Cov Police didn't score the conversion, much to the relief of Warwickshire Police who secured their first win since 2005/2006 season.
