As a Southampton-born guy, I am looking for the opportunity to give something back to the city of my birth. Such an idea came to light during the night of the 24th December 2016, when it struck me that as my family and others were getting ready for Christmas and all the joy it represents, the high street in Southampton had quite a number of homeless also bedding down for the night. After taking some time out to speak with one particular guy whom I will nickname 'Tom', I realised that whilst people may be on the streets for various reasons, sometimes they just need our attention and to not simply be invisible. 'Tom' engaged with me in an interesting conversation about his own life story with tales of adventure and humour and at that moment I promised to myself that I would try and help what are some of societies most vulnerable people, without judgement.

Whilst it is only something small, I have decided to help by enlisting as a sponsored runner for a local charity that seeks to support the homeless community of Southampton with shelter and sometimes, simply non-judgemental conversation.  Perhaps 'Tom' may directly benefit from this or may even see me run, who knows?! Finally, if you can't donate, no worries and thank you again for taking the time to read this story and to at least be aware of the work of Society of St James

Finally, if you can, next time you see a homeless person on the street, please treat them as an individual and simply a 'hello', nothing more: 'Tom' told me that this does wonders for their own well-being.
