Story
It has been a difficult few weeks for so many people as we adjust to life under lockdown during the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak. Social distancing measures have been used to alleviate the spread of this horrible disease, but such measures are likely to have both short and long term effects on the mental health of many individuals.
It is vitally important that those people who suffer from mental health problems get the support and help that they need now and over the coming months. Sadly, suicide remains the most common cause of death amongst young men in the UK, with 90% of these men suffering from a mental health condition at the time of their death.
The Ted Senior Foundation is a registered UK charity that works closely with various mental health initiatives to prevent suicide in students & young people. Our own school community was shocked and saddened by the untimely death of Jacob Picken earlier this year. The Picken family has chosen this worthy charity as the recipient of our fundraising efforts.
Starting at 7am on Friday 15th May until 7am on Saturday 16th May, some pupils from Monmouth Boys school and the wider Monmouth community are taking part in a 24 hour "Sound of Silence" appeal, where we will stop all forms of spoken communication during this time.
We hope this will enable us to reflect on the mental health difficulties arising from this period of lock down and social distancing. It also gives us an opportunity to give something back to our local community that could help save lives.
Please support our initiative and help us to raise funds for this amazing charity.
