Story
In June 2019, Members of the Airport Fire Service at
Southampton will be undertaking a mammoth challenge in support of our local Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Service. You may not be aware but the Air Ambulance Services provided across the country are non-government funded and only survive due to charitable donations
The challenge we have set ourselves is to visit all 3 of the
airports in the AGS Group as part of a cycle event finishing at Southampton Airport.
I guess you may be wondering where the ‘mammoth’ part of the
challenge is… It’s all about ‘location, location, location’. The AGS Airport
Group has the greatest demographic distance between its most Northerly location in Aberdeen and its most Southerly location in Southampton via a ‘small’ diversion to Glasgow Airport. As a thank
you for all the hard work they do, we have also planned a scheduled stop on the final leg of our journey to see the flight crew, doctors, paramedics and staff that help make up Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, located at Thruxton Airport in Hampshire.
Six members of Southampton’s Airport Fire service will cycle
the complete distance within 6 days, covering approximately 655 miles on the way. This means that each rider will need to complete over 100 miles each day.
This is the cycling equivalent of running the London marathon, without taking into consideration the terrain of the Scottish boarders, Lake District & Pennines.
