We're funding vital research into necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), a devastating bowel disorder that mainly strikes premature babies. Each year in the UK, hundreds of babies develop NEC and tragically, up to 35% of these babies do not survive.

Story

Thank you for visiting our sponsorship page. We are pushing ourselves to raise funds for Action Medical research to develop treatments that will help save lives.

In Feb 2018 Janey's son Joshua was born, three months premature at only 27 weeks.  It was a difficult time, unable to even give her son a hug, she sat on vigil in hospital as Joshua fought for his life. At 5 weeks old Josh contracted necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) a potentially fatal bowel infection. He was put back on a ventilator and rushed back into intensive care. With the help of life support machines and amazing medical care Joshua made it, he left hospital after 94 days and is now happy, healthy and already walking!   Sadly there are babies who are not as lucky as Joshua. Families and mothers who are grieving the loss of babies and little children. Action Medical Research is raising funds to help understand the illnesses and medical problems faced by premature babies like Joshua. Conditions like NEC which he survived but many others don't.

Sophie, Rin and Sandy are joining Janey to challenge themselves over 24 hours in the Lake District. We will cycle 50 miles, climb up Hellvlyn and canoe around Lake Thirlmere to raise funds for Action Medical Research and help babies like Joshua who deserve a chance at life. Rin worked as a dietician in a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) helping ensure babies get the best nutrition at this difficult time. She knows how hard Joshua had to fight for life. In fact he still sees the SCBU nutritionalist now at almost 18 months old.

Action Medical Research is the leading UK-wide charity saving and changing children’s lives through medical research. For 65 years they have helped pioneer ways to prevent disease and develop treatments benefiting millions of people. Their research has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths. But they urgently need to develop more new treatments and cures for sick babies and children and can’t do it without you. Join their fight for little lives

Thank you reading our story, we appreciate any amount you are able to give to help fund research to save babies lives.
