Fundraising for Sense
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
As some of you might already know, I have decided to run the London Marathon this year for Sense. As I have a charity place with them, I need to raise a total of £1400 and I need all you lovely people to help me do that! Also, if any of you want to join me on my training runs then please let me know!
I am a medical student at King’s College London and will be participating in the gruelling 26 mile race for the first time. I have chosen to run for Sense in honour of my late nanny who had a hearing impairment and my grandad who is suffering from sight problems. I am also studying British Sign Language (level 2) and hope to use it in my future medical career. I am thoroughly enjoying learning sign language with Peter Brown, my tutor, who helped me pass level 1 last year!
Training is going well and I regularly run from Canary Wharf along the Southbank of the Thames.
I am also one of the founding trustees of the London-based charity SHINE - Make Every Child Count (www.kclshine.org.uk). SHINE provides university student mentors to primary school children and to date, has supported over 500 children in the Boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth. Recent evaulation of the mentoring programmes has shown that children benefit by having a mentor, which is shown through improved academic performance, school attendance, increased aspirations to further and higher education and behavioural improvments. I have had many achievements with the charity, including receiving a Gold Award from Volunteering England, grant from the National Lottery and was proud to hold the official launch of the charity at the National Gallery in November.
I’m really pleased to be braving the London Marathon for Sense as it offers a vital lifeline to deafblind people, offering them support and teaching skills to live as independently as possible. I would like to thank all of my friends and family who have sponsored me for my marathon run so far and am still appealing for sponsorship for my run – so please dig deep and support me today.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Sense - National Deafblind and Rubella Association gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor me!
Thanks, Sophie x x
