South Coast Half Marathon · 12 January 2008
Hello!
I am running the South Coast Half Marathon on March 9th 2008 in aid of the Penan, a semi-nomadic tribe who live inSarawak,Borneo. Sarawak is suffering some of the most rapid deforestation on the planet and 70% of its primary rainforest is now logged and exported.
My main objective in running for the charity Survival International is to raise awareness of the situation of the Penan, some of whom i met and lived with in Sarawak in 2002, and to show the unregulated infringements which affect their current way of life.
Survival International is a charity which helps tribal people protect their lands. I am in correspondence with both Survival and the villagers at Long Lamei, Sarawak to see how any raised funds can best be utilised.
The South Coast Half Marathon is 13.5 miles. I'm not a very talented runner (I inherited a penguin-like waddle from my dad, much to my disappointment), but I will run the whole way and will run quicker for more sponsorship!!
If you decide to sponsor, anything from 5p to 50p to £5 and upwards will be appreciated! All your donations will go direct to this registered charity, and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
If you don't feel like sponsoring, but would like to find out more please take a quick look at the following links. (The BBC Tribe site is worth a special visit):

Any donations really will be most appreciated, and I will keep you updated on all forthcoming correspondence and developments!
Many thanks for your support. Have a fantastic 2008!
Sophie
