Reimagining the 'ultra' and #RemoteRelay · 4 July 2020

North London Cares is a community network of young professionals and older neighbours hanging out with one another in a rapidly changing city. Through our Social Clubs and Love Your Neighbour (one-to-one) activities, neighbours share a little extra time, laughter and human companionship.

Story

On the 4th July 2020, I was due to be running my first ultra marathon (52km/32miles?!) in order to raise funds for an incredible charity, North London Cares. Then covid hit....

Fundraising through challenges helps raise so much money for charities, so when they are no longer possible now is the time to get a little bit creative and carry on supporting them!

North London Cares aims to tackle loneliness in the community through bringing together a network of young professionals and older neighbours to hang out and support each other in a rapidly changing city - through their 'Love Your Neighbour' programme, social clubs and so much more. Now more than ever, the work that North London Cares does is so important to help bring together people in the community in what has been an incredibly isolating time.

I've been volunteering with North London Cares since January and have been able to see first hand just how much their work means to the community. From my personal perspective it has also helped me feel more connected to my new home.

That's why I wanted to go ahead with my 'ultra' and help support the amazing work of this charity. So....I am going to be taking part in two challenges.

Over the 4th and 5th July, the original date of my event, I will be completing my 'ultra' and then on 20th July, I will be taking part in the #RemoteRelay to mark Loneliness Awareness Week.

4th July - I will be running/walking 26km between the London Cares hubs: from Camden, to Hackney, to Brixton and back.

5th July - I will be heading to the Peak District where my original event was supposed to take place and completing the second 26km. (6th July will then be spent on the sofa when I can't move my legs)

20th July - I will be representing Team North London and taking on a 10km leg of the #RemoteRelay. This will see 'teams' across North London, East London, South London, Liverpool and Manchester running/walking/cycling around to raise money for the Cares Family.

Any donations would be massively appreciated and will go to such good use. (They will also keep me motivated and moving!).
