Story

In 2006, Tom Hunt was a normal and well adjusted 15 year old boy who accidentally broke his arm whilst out playing with his dog. X-ray scans showed that he was suffering with Osteasarcoma (bone cancer) and this news was devastating and life changing for Tom, his family and his friends. Tom immediately became a patient at Bristol Children’s Hospital and, in 2007, he went in to remission. Tom felt that part of his healing process should be credited to the excellent standard of care, the environment and the amazing staff.

Sadly, in 2009 a cancerous tumour appeared on one of Tom’s lungs. An operation to remove the tumour was successful but treatments to prevent further occurrences failed. During this period, Tom was treated as an adult cancer patient at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Oncology Centre as he was now 19 years old. Unfortunately, whilst the staff worked tirelessly to help, Tom felt that his needs as a teenager were not well catered for; his treatments and time as a patient became an area of added apprehension during an already difficult period as there was little stimulation in the adult wards. Tom knew that having fun, engaging and interesting activities would provide a better healing environment for teenagers in Bristol and a ward set up specifically for teenagers would provide a massive benefit to those battling cancer.

Tom lost his battle with cancer on the 26th of December 2010.
