Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I must be a little bit crazy but I am running the Reading half marathon again in March. Once the pain wore off from last year’s and I learnt to walk again I decided that it was great fun!
I have chosen the same charity as last year, Barrett’s Oesophageal campaign, not only is it a great cause so close to my heart it is also a cause that needs much more awareness.
As many people know I lost my dad to oesophageal cancer in 2010 after only a short battle with the illness. I feel that had our family known more about Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer we would have been more aware of treatments for this condition and the support that was available to us.
I found some facts from the cancer research uk website that I found interesting/shocking.
· Oesophageal cancer is the ninth most common cancer in the UK.
- In 2009, 8,161 people were diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the UK, that’s around 22 people every day.
- Oesophageal cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer death and accounts for around 5% of all cancer deaths in the UK.
- In 2010 in the UK, 7,610 people died from oesophageal cancer in the UK, that is around 21 people every day.
