Story
In May last year we were given the devastating news that Mum had been diagnosed with Stage 4 secondary breast cancer. Nothing could ever prepare us for the heartbreak seeing Mum go through major surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy to battle the tumours that had grown across her spine, in her liver and in her lower back and legs. Every day Mum smiled for us, even though the pain was relentless, she never gave up.
As the weeks went by, Mum got more and more poorly. In August, she was moved to St Giles Hospice in Lichfield. It was here that Mum was given the most amazing care from the wonderful team at St Giles. Nothing was ever too much, even in the middle of a pandemic.
Although so busy, the team catered to Mum’s every need. From treats, to chats and sitting holding her hand. Mum even got to choose her favourite meals – a firm favourite being milky pudding. We spent every minute with Mum, watching thunderstorms out of the window, looking through photos and she even managed to give us a few laughs - particularly at Dad's thinning hair!
On Saturday 22nd August, after two weeks in the hospice, Mum lost her fight, and our hearts broke forever.
Although it was, and still is incredibly difficult to even put one foot in front of the other, we are overwhelmed and humbled by the support we received from the team at St Giles Hospice.
From 22nd February for a month, my awesome friends Laura, Beth, Jackie and Jax (otherwise known as Trev) are joining me by walking, cycling and running to complete 100 miles for St Giles in memory of Mum, and to raise vital funds for the hospice.
We know that times are really challenging right now. Any donations however small would be greatly received and give us the encouragement to do this for Mum.
It costs £10 million a year to keep the service going, of which a third is provided by the NHS. So many events have been cancelled this year due to Covid19, St Giles Hospice needs our support more than ever.
Thank you so much xxx
