Story
I lost my Mam on 03.04.2022 after a short battle with a brain tumour. My Mam was first diagnosed with a brain tumour on 09.01.22. My Dad took her to A&E after she was experiencing memories issues over Christmas and she also started to become confused when speaking using the wrong words. 3 weeks after her diagnosis, on 28.01.22 my Mam had her first operation to remove the tumour. The operation was successful and they removed everything that they were able to do safely. We then found out my Mam had a Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiform. My Mam recovered well after her first operation, going to get her nails done and went to the Newcastle match. But, 3 and a half weeks after her first operation on 21.02.22 her speech started to go again and she was taken back into hospital. She had a second operation on 23.02.22, where they again removed all of the tumour that they could safely however, the tumour had grown back to the original size in that 3 weeks. Her radiotherapy was due to start 4-5 weeks after her first operation, and was a 6 week plan however, this has to be rethought. My Mam then started an intense radiotherapy course which was meant to be 6 weeks but was completed over 2 weeks. My Mam never really recovered from her second operation, and despite 2 operations and a round of radiotherapy she passed on 03.04.22.
Brain tumours have a survival rate of just 12% past 5 years. This is extremely low compared to most cancers where this is around 50%.
Me, my best friend Sophie and my cousins Christie and Lizzie are running the Great North Run to raise as much money for Brain Tumour Research, to help fund further research and treatments. Any donations would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!
