Story

On the 28th of May 2022 we are going to be taking part in a sponsored walk to raise money for a charity that has played a huge part in our lives over the last few months.  We will be walking from Glaisdale to Goatland, this will be a fun, relaxed 8 mile walk which we will be doing in aid of our beautiful Holly raising money and awareness for the National Brain Appeal who fund raises for the Rare Dementia Support (RDS) team.

Rare Dementia Support supports people affected by 7 of the rare dementias including carers and bereaved carers.

Holly’s story…Holly has always been a strong, confident happy person who loves to socialise with friends and family. Holly is mam to her beautiful 2 year old daughter Alba and is wife to her loving husband Alex.

In 2019 shortly after Alba was born, friends and family began to notice some slight changes in Holly’s behaviour. As time went on the changes became more and more noticeable, at first, it was assumed that Holly’s behaviour changes may have been linked to a thyroid issue that Holly had recently been diagnosed with. Due to the global pandemic Holly was not seen by a medical professional for several months. As time progressed the changes in Holly’s personality become more advanced causing great concern to her loved ones. After some medical investigations Hollys family and friends were given the devastating news that Holly has Frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), is part of a group of disorders that occur when nerve cells in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain are lost. This causes the lobes to shrink. FTD can affect behavior, personality, language, and movement.

Hollys condition is progressing faster than any of us anticipated, as family and friends we are doing all we can to support Holly and create a safe, loving and caring environment for her during this scary, confusing time. The Rare Dementia Support team have been a godsend to those caring for Holly, offering their expertise and support to the family and so we would like to give something back.

We really want to make the day a good one, one that is full of fun and laughter, just the way Holly would like it! If you would like to join in on the walk please contact myself or Kayleigh Spooner for more details.Any donations, big or small would be gratefully appreciated, all funds will go to the National Brain Appeal and Rare Dementia Support team who will hopefully be able to continue their fantastic work.
