Story
My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2013. Videos of Dad singing in the car went viral in 2016 and we raised money for the Alzheimer's Society to help support the National Dementia Helpline.
However, in 2018, Dad declined significantly. He is completely confused and lost - no longer recognising his family or surroundings. His words are mixed up and doesn't make any sense anymore. He can be distressed for hours trying to find us, even though we're stood right next to him. It's a cruel illness - and the worst thing is that it can only get worse. I truly wouldn't want any other family or individual to go through the pain that we - and many others - have gone through.
I passionately believe that there must be a reason why this is happening to people and that we can't just accept that dementia is an inevitable part of aging. There are also currently no medications that can slow down or reverse the condition.
That's where Alzheimer's Research UK comes in. They are the UK's leading dementia research charity and they fund research projects into the causes, treatments and potential cures for Alzheimer's Disease and dementia. They also provide information about risk reduction backed by the scientific research they support.
Dementia research is massively underfunded - there is just 1 dementia researcher for every 4 cancer researchers. In 2016 over £645million was spent on cancer research while dementia - now the UK's biggest cause of death - had just £54million.
We hope that - in some small way - we can help change that.
