Story
PAPYRUS is the national Charity for the Prevention of Young Suicide. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK, in 2018 over 1800 young people took their own lives. PAPYRUS provides confidential support and advice to young people struggling with thoughts of suicide, and anyone worried about a young person through their helpline, HOPELINEUK. Every £5 raised can help pay for a life-saving contact to HOPELINEUK. PAPYRUS are looking to expand the HOPELINEUK service to be able to run 24/7. The cost of this would be in the region of £250k-£300k, so any large donations could go towards this. PAPYRUS also offer training out in the community, where £200 can cover the cost of one person attending our Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
This charity is close to me as I lost one of my best friends to suicide in May 2014. Deanne Greet-Rickeard was just 22 when she sadly passed away. She was always the life and soul of everywhere she went. Always singing, dancing and laughing. I was totally shocked to hear that she had taken her own life as I was unaware of the pain she was clearly suffering. I wish there was something I could have done to help her.
In recognition of PAPYRUS looking to expand their HOPELINEUK service to 24 hours, and as my way of trying to help others who are suffering, I am doing my own 24 hour challenge. I will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for 'Greatest distance travelled karting on an outdoor circuit in 24 hours by an individual' at the British 24 Hour Kart Race 2021.
This event usually runs in August, so I have given myself plenty of time to train for the attempt and to raise a bucket load of money for this very deserving charity.
Your donations really are lifesaving, thank you.
