Story
Hello everyone. As some of you will know, I have entered several crazy cycling challenges to raise money for YMCA East Surrey in the past.
This year despite being even older and supposedly wiser, I am at it again! I am late in starting my fund raising this year, as until the eleventh hour I wasn't sure that I was going to get fit enough to make it through.
On the 9th July I will be joining 21 other dedicated YMCA supporters attempting a 4.5 day challenge in the Italian and Swiss Alps, that concludes with an ascent up the mighty Stelvio Pass, to raise money for the Life Change Fund. We are attempting to cycle 365 miles and climb around 38,500 ft of mountains! Stelvio is a fierce mountain in the Italian Alps famous for its 47 hairpins. It is the second highest paved pass in Europe at 9,045ft and even in the summer there is snow and ice at the top! Before this we will also be scaling the San Bernardino Pass in Switzerland, Mortirolo and Passo Gavia in Italy, to name a few.
I am hoping to raise at least £600 from this event towards the Y Bus Appeal. In 2023, they have exciting plans for a new ‘Y-Bus’ – a mobile youth club on wheels to reach young people in areas where there is little or no youth provision.
The aim of the bus is to offer activities, advice and support to young people across East Surrey, with a focus on those who are:
• Not in education, employment or training (NEET)
• Engaging in anti-social behaviour
• Facing issues at school
• Struggling with mental health issues
• At risk of exploitation or offending.
