<p>My name is Rory Smith. Im 17 and from Northern Ireland. A very close family member has recently been diasgnoised with diabetes so on the 6th August I will be climbing the 2,697ft <span style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"> </span>slieve donard mountain, the highest peak in the provience of Ulster Northern Ireland in order to raise money and awareness for Diabetes UK. Many peoples lives have been turned upside down due to this terrible illness so please please please, help to support me and diabetes in Northern Ireland. Thank-You</p>
<p>I thought diabetes wasn't all that serious....that is until I read the facts:</p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Book', sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 19px;">- There are <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">2.8 million</strong> people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Book', sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22px;"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: "Franklin Gothic Book","sans-serif"; color: black;">- Life expectancy</span></strong><span style="font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: "Franklin Gothic Book","sans-serif"; color: black;"> is reduced on average by 20 years in those with Type 1 diabetes and up to ten years in Type 2 diabetes.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Book', sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 24px;">-Diabetes is the leading cause of <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">blindness</strong> in people of working age in the UK.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Book', sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 24px;">- The rate of <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">lower limb amputation</strong> in people with diabetes is 15 times higher than in people without diabetes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Book', sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 24px;">- The NHS spends around five per cent of its budget or close <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">to £10 million a day</strong> treating diabetes and its effects.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Book', sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 24px;">- NHS spend on diabetes <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">will rise to ten per cent</strong> by 2011.</span></p>
