Switchback is a London based charity that helps young men aged 18-30 to build a new life as they leave prison. 

Switchback’s purpose is to enable young men to find a way out of the justice system and build a stable, rewarding life they can be proud of. They provide extensive training and support into full-time work.

Their 3-stage process involves long-term, 1-1 meetings with mentors. This starts in the final 3 months of their prison sentence and continues during work training with a partner employer. The final stage provides in-work support to ensure lasting change.

I believe Switchback's focus on measurable improvements to life prospects is crucial. Nationally, 48% of prison leavers are reconvicted within a year and fewer than a fifth move into work. Moreover, the annual cost of reoffending is £18 billion. However, Switchback Trainees are five times less likely to return to custody. Switchback has supported more than 2000 young men out of the criminal justice system.
