Ride for Ceylon is an annual cycling fundraiser that began in 2017, uniting riders, donors, and volunteers to support the revival of Green Memorial Hospital (GMH) in Manipay, Northern Sri Lanka. Founded in 1848, GMH is Sri Lanka’s oldest teaching hospital, once a centre of excellence, now being restored thanks to this powerful community initiative. What started as the vision of the Trustees of the Friends of Manipay Hospital, a UK registered charity (No. 1113439), and many well-wishers, is more than just a cycle ride, it’s a mission of healing. Each year, cyclists take on a 450+ km ride from Colombo to Manipay, not just as a physical challenge, but as a mission to heal, reconnect, and rebuild lives in a region affected by decades of civil conflict. Funds raised go directly toward the redevelopment of GMH and related healthcare projects, delivering lasting impact to underserved communities. With safety, inclusivity, and team spirit at its core, Ride for Ceylon welcomes riders of all backgrounds and abilities. We also support other good causes chosen by our riders. Whether cycling, donating, or cheering us on, your support helps restore the Greatest Medical Heritage of Ceylon. All riders pay for their own travel, transportation and accommodation cost. Much of the ride logistic costs are supported by sponsors. Thereby enabling all donations to be applied to charitable work.

Story

Each year over forty riders from across the globe participate in this annual bike ride from Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital, to the war-devastated Jaffna Peninsula. This year, we are fundraising, by riding a gruelling 475km from Arugam Bay in the southeast, to Manipay Jaffa in the north.

The journey begins on the 1st of March and will end four days later, after cycling for 475km. During this time, the weather in Sri Lanka will be extremely hot and humid; because of this, we would have to start cycling at 4:00 AM each day and stop by 11:00 AM.

We will use the donations and sponsorships we receive to purchase a much-needed X-ray machine - SLRS 30 million or approx £75,000 and provide valuable and continuous medical services to the local community. This community holds a special place in Siva's heart as it's his hometown and the hospital where he was born.

We gladly welcome all generous donations and appreciate your kindness.
