Story
Jamie and I are keen to make a difference as we enter 2021. We had originally decided to run the Green Man Ultra Marathon on the 6th March however due to COVID-19 forcing the event’s postponement we have decided to create our own challenge for the same day.
We will be running a unique 45 mile loop around London that will start and end at the Greenhouse Centre. We will be taking on this challenge in support of Greenhouse Sports and aiming to fundraise £30,000 to pay for a Head Coach to be based full-time in a school for a year.
Sport is an incredible vehicle to teach life skills. Sport can combat lack of opportunity to less fortunate children. It has been proven that Greenhouse Coaches enhance educational attainment, keeps young people engaged with school, and improves mental health, reducing depression and anxiety and increasing self-esteem. Provision that appeals to young people is becoming increasingly vital for children growing up in London. What Greenhouse has, through its sports programmes, is accessibility, an appeal to young people, and an ability to provide a route out of gang violence and youth crime.
Government funded youth services, services that were accessed by kids from poorer areas, have suffered a 70% funding cut in the last 10 years, with some areas experience cuts by 91% in the last 3 years. And it is no coincidence that this statistic exists alongside a steep increase of youth violence.
Every child deserves a fair chance to succeed no matter what their background is. Please help us raise as much as we can.
Thank you
Jamie & Simon
