Salcombe coastal marathon · 29 April 2017
Since moving to Devon last year I became involved with Hope Cove lifeboat. Its independent and looks after a beautiful but surprisingly tricky piece of coast not easily or quickly reached by the brilliant RNLI. We are all volunteers and train and practice weekly all year round. The entire operation is run very professionally and it takes a lot of time and commitment, plus all the equipment costs a great deal to buy and maintain. Its not without its risks ether to the crew. One boat was overturned in rough seas on a callout.!

Rachel and I are entering the Salcombe Cliff top challenge, going from Torcross to Bantham all along the cliff path. A full marathon but with over 4500 ft of ascent and descent. We are doing it 'Nordic' with proper walking poles so the calorie count will near double a brisk walk. It will be as hard as a run, estimated around 6000 to 7000 calories. I am also looking to do it sub eight hours including energy stops. Training is going well and failure is not an option. There is a half marathon bail out but I will be disappointed unless I get injured. We have donated our entry fee to another charity so hope to raise extra money for the lifeboat. Anything you can do will be appreciated by us all. Thank you so much and we are pleased to be keeping you all safe on your holiday's, water sports and activities out in the bays.
