The London Marathon for Myeloma UK
The Big C!
Back in March, after 6 months of appointments, tests and assessments my Mum was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer called Myeloma, which accounts for less than 1% of all cancer diagnosis. Myeloma is a life-long, incurable cancer that occurs in the bone marrow. As there is no cure, there are periods where after treatment the symptoms subside, but will re-occur requiring another round of treatment.
I can’t put into words how proud I am of how Mum has dealt with both the diagnosis, and the gruelling treatment process that has followed!
So far Mum has gone through over 18 weeks of a chemotherapy plan, 3 continuous days of extremely high dose and concentrated chemotherapy, and 3 weeks in isolation in Cheltenham Hospital to enable a stem cell transplant. Mum has been determined to stay as positive as she can and is constantly pushing to keep active every day, whilst also managing a spinal fracture caused by the cancer!
To try and support, I am really pleased to have secured a space to run the London Marathon in April for Myeloma UK Charity. Myeloma UK receive no central funding and all activity is supported by fundraising.
Myeloma UK have been, and continue to be a fantastic support to both Mum, and our family. They fund research to try and improve outcomes, make living with Myeloma more manageable and ultimately to try and find a cure. They also offer amazing resources, support groups and advice for anyone affected by a Myeloma!
