Story
I’m running the Great North Run this year in aid of Sported, one of Nissan’s nominated charities which is working together with Nissan to break down the barriers to participation in sport for young disabled people. Through fundraising we aim to provide much needed mobility equipment, support and coaching to enable young disabled people to live a more fulfilled life through the power of sport. I’d really appreciate any donation you’re able to give and there will also be a dedicated Nissan cheering zone if you want to come and support me on the day.
8 in 10 disabled people wish to do more physical activity, but face a number of barriers to participation, barriers that have been magnified by the pandemic increased isolation, restricted access to suitable facilities and equipment, increased mental health issues. Sported believe passionately that young people with physical or mental disabilities should have the same opportunity to run and play as any other young person. They work with over 900 community organisations across the UK who deliver opportunities to play for young people with disabilities, providing the coaches and volunteers with the knowledge, guidance and funding required to break down the multiple barriers to participation. Through the fundraising efforts, Sported will be able to increase the support for these groups, as well as educating a wider network of groups on how to be disability inclusive, with the ultimate goal of getting more young people with disabilities enjoying the benefits of running and playing.
