Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Michelle, a very dear friend of ours was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2010. Since then she has undergone 2 major operations, 6 months Chemotherapy and 3 weeks radiotherapy. She is still undergoing intense treatment. We cannot believe how strong and positive she has been throughout everything, she is a total inspiration and we just felt like we wanted to do something to support Breast Cancer Care.
As a result, in June 2011 we are cycling 190 miles coast to coast following as closely as possible the Wainwright path.
Day 1 19th June – St Bees to Ambleside (32 miles)
Starting with our front wheel in the sea and picking up a stone from the beach we will set off from St Bees to Ambleside. Quite a short cycle on day 1 although we will be going over Hardknott pass, one of only 5 roads in the UK with a gradient of 1 in 3, and the Wrynose pass before arriving in Ambleside.
Day 2 20th June - Ambleside to Kirkby Stephen (45 miles)
From Ambleside we will ride off road to Troutbeck where we pick up the Garburn pass to Kentmere, on to Sadgill and then to wet Sleddale reservoir and on to Shap. Most of this section is off road. From Shap it is all minor roads to Kirkby Stephen.
Day 3. 21st June - Kirkby Stephen to Osmotherly (64 miles)
Sounds a long way but it is all on roads, mostly minor ones across the Yorkshire dales past the Tan Hill pub, passing through Reeth and Richmond en route to Osmotherly.
Day 4. 22nd June - Osmotherly to Robin Hoods Bay (45 miles)
All mostly on minor roads across the north Yorkshire moors apart from the last 3 miles on a disused railway track. We finish with a ride into Robin Hoods Bay and dip our front wheels in the sea and throw the stone onto the beach.
The journey is being organised by Michelle’s husband, Mark. Below is an extract from his Just Giving site
"Through all this she has never moaned, never felt sorry for herself and just tried to carry on as normal as possible, sometimes doing a bit more than she really should do. I cannot put into words how incredibly proud of her I am as ever day she looks and feels better and I am so lucky to have her. Throughout her illness Michelle has received wonderful support from her family and friends as well as all the hospital staff who have been fantastic."
